SAN FRANCISCO — House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said she is concerned that the Obama administration’s crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries is hurting patients with a legitimate need for the drug. The San Francisco congresswoman said in a statement Wednesday that the crackdown has undermined “a policy that has been in place under which the federal government did not pursue individuals whose actions complied with state laws providing for medicinal marijuana.” The crackdown was initiated last fall by federal prosecutors in California, Colorado and other states against landlords, growers and dispensary operators.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wants President Barack Obama to lay off the weed. Reacting to an ongoing crackdown on medical marijuana facilities in California, Pelosi said in a Wednesday statement, “I have strong concerns about the recent actions by the federal government that threaten the safe access of medicinal marijuana to alleviate the suffering of patients in California.” The California Democrat said that medical marijuana is “both a medical and a states’ rights issue.” California legalized the use of medical marijuana in a 1996 initiative vote. It’s comically easy for many residents to acquire the necessary medical diagnosis to legally purchase the drug.

Pot patients are marching to Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco office as we type to deliver a petition demanding she do something to stop the ongoing and significant crackdown on local pot clubs. The petition, which you can find here , asks Pelosi to defend medical marijuana users who rely on medical marijuana to relieve themselves of pain they have from illnesses. Five city-permitted pot dispensaries have shuttered their doors in the last few months, and five more are slated to close this month, thanks to President Obama’s unpopular policies on medical marijuana.
