Your Letter: Dear President Obama– You promised us, the medical cannabis community, that we would find peace under your leadership, and yet we still see raids and other forms of federal interference plaguing our community. Worse yet, we still find patients and caregivers going to jail for providing the sick and disabled with the medication they so desperately need. On May 2, 2011, two more medical cannabis patients will become prisoners of a failed war on drugs resulting from the continued federal interference with state sanctioned medical cannabis laws.

Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule I drug in the Controlled Substances Act, a category reserved for drugs which have “no currently accepted medical use”. Marijuana has known medical uses and, therefore, should not be classified as a Schedule I substance. The removal of cannabis from this schedule would provide access to millions of sick and disabled citizens in the United States, as well as open the gates for legitimate testing to be done to prove the medicinal efficacy of cannabis! The federal government should accept marijuana’s known medical uses and remove it from the Schedule I list of drugs.
